December 22 and -4 degrees

My alarm woke me up at 6:15 for the sunrise. I wanted to give him something special for Christmas and I was running out of time. I knew I had to take the photo this morning regardless of the below zero temperature. TMJ4 had predicted a clear blue sky. There was a practically a blizzard the week before and the skies had been overcast for days. Half asleep, I put on as many layers as I could and grabbed the watercolor paper on my easel with my message for him written on it. I wasn’t really sure where I was going to go. I knew I wanted to see the steam coming off of the icy lake, blue skies and the sunrise. I parked my car along Lake Drive and drudged through 2 feet of snow to the path. I was disappointed to find that trees blocked the lake view and the slope down looked too dangerous. I walked a bit hoping the trees would clear a little and then I saw some stairs leading down to the beach. Perfect! When I got to the bottom I saw a few tracks in the 2-3 ft snowdrifts! It was hard to see where the lake ended and land began. I looked to my right and I could see the sun peaking through some trees in what looked like a little peninsula. I knew that would be the perfect spot, but the snowdrifts were huge and it was so cold… I took a deep breath and told myself I would be fine. I sort of felt ridiculous. I had to do it, so I did. I got a little scared at one point because I wasn't sure how close I was to the waters edge, even though I was pretty sure the lake was frozen. In one hand I had my camera, the other I had the watercolor paper. I figured I could just stick the message in the snow like it was some kind of a caption/title for the photo. I wanted him to know that I made this picture solely for him. I walked a little further and then began taking photos (quickly) It was so cold I had to keep putting my camera back in the bag when I was scoping out new spots. It took me about 10 minutes before I felt satisfied that I captured the image I wanted. I turned back and realized I had wandered a lot farther than I thought. Oh just great! I laughed at my self for being such a crazy. Merry Christmas.
