I began photographing Girls Rock MKE in 2013 during its first camp, when my child was six months old. I remember crying at the final showcase, imagining them on that stage one day.
Over time, they attended the camp themselves, and I returned as both a photographer and volunteer.
This work focuses on the moments around performance: portraits and observations of young people beginning to understand who they are.
The organization will become Get Loud MKE in 2027, reflecting an ongoing commitment to inclusion and to supporting marginalized identities through creativity, collaboration, and music. I hope this project continues to evolve alongside that shift.
